Can you overtake on the inside

Most drivers and riders consider overtaking to be crossing to the 'wrong' side of the road to pass a vehicle in front. But, even if you do not cross to the 'wrong' side of the road, you are overtaking if you move into another lane or line of traffic either side of you to pass another vehicle. Even if you do not cross over to the 'wrong' side, there are some important safety rules you must follow. The rules for overtaking on a multi-lane or unlaned road are similar to those for a single-lane road.

Remember, bicycle riders and motorcyclists are harder to see in traffic and do not have the same protection as drivers. When overtaking bicycle riders allow at least 1 metre clearance, or 1. See examples 4A, 5A and 6A on the Driving on the road page.

Bicycle riders can overtake another vehicle on the left, but not if it is indicating and turning left. Except when overtaking, road trains must maintain at least metres behind another long vehicle and if your vehicle is a long vehicle 7. This does not apply to roads in a built-up area or multi-lane roads.

Unsafe overtaking is something truck drivers see all too often. People can become impatient behind trucks on hills or when there are few passing opportunities. So allow plenty of room, pass quickly but safely and pull back in, only when you can see both headlights of the truck in your rear view mirror. This allows a safe space, but don't then slow down in front of the truck.

It is also important to avoid being pressured into overtaking by other following vehicles. Keep your cool and if necessary let them pass. A full evaluation of any evidence would be needed to give a definitive position. However, the second and perhaps most relevant point to consider at this early stage is a procedural one. Given that you were not stopped at the roadside, that NIP would ordinarily be issued in writing to the registered keeper of the vehicle you were driving.

If you are the registered keeper then the likelihood is that if you do not receive a NIP within 14 days of this incident, no prosecution will take place. Clicking the Accept All button means you are accepting analytics and third-party cookies check the full list.

Print Keeping left and overtaking Keeping left On single-lane roads, you must stay as close as practical to the left side of the road. Drivers are allowed to overtake on the left on all multi-lane roads. Video of keeping left Watch this short video to learn more about keeping left and overtaking.

View transcript Is it okay to drive in the right hand lane if there isn't a keep left unless overtaking sign? Overtaking long vehicles You should take extreme care when overtaking long or oversize vehicles such as a truck or bus or a vehicle towing a caravan or trailer. A long vehicle is longer than a normal vehicle. Signs on the back of long or oversize vehicles that indicate you must not overtake them when they turn.

Do not overtake to the left of a long vehicle which is turning left. Overtake a long vehicle on the left when it's safe to do so and when on a multi-lane road. Overtaking motorcycles When overtaking a motorcycle, follow the same rules and give them as much space as a car. Give motorcycles plenty of room when overtaking. If necessary, when overtaking a bicycle you can: drive to the right of the centre of the road cross or straddle dividing lines broken or unbroken, single or double drive on flat painted islands and median strips.

Bicycles can overtake a vehicle on the left.
